Britons are collectively planning to spend £ 4.5 billion on improvements over Easter at home, with many hoping the value of their property, a survey has shown.

The average person spent £ 181 for DIY projects in the Bank Holiday weekend, rose to more than £ 200 between the people of London, according to studies of the Co-operative Bank.

Almost one third of people said they planned to carry out work in a bid to determine the value of their property, while 28% wanted their current home, because they not afford to move.

But 16% of people said they were planning a DIY project, so that they are not boring, 13% want to be an environmentally friendly home and 9% want more space for the extended family.

Homeowners are most likely to carry out the work in the garden and living room at 18%, followed by the master bedroom with 17% and the kitchen at 15%.

But while 33% of people are painting and 29% will be gardening, 12% of people planning home improvements, new furniture purchase.

Terry Jordan, head of mortgages at the Co-operative Bank, said: "In the current economic situation with the slowdown in the real estate market, people can not move house as much as before.

"Instead, the research clearly shows that people are looking to make improvements to their existing houses, in order to add value and improve their habitat."
