Gateway's newly-announced EC14D ultraportable laptop bucks the trend of others in this segment by adding an integrated DVD drive, just as so many others are shaving down size and weight by removing optical storage from the design.
The new system features an 11.6" screen with a resolution of 1366x768 and weighs about 3.55 lbs. in its base configuration. It will be powered by a dual-core Pentium CULV processor and Intel's GS45 Express chipset, which means you're stuck with the GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics. 4GB of DDR2 667MHz memory comes standard, with an upgrade option to 80GB. Also standard is a 6-cell 5600 mAh battery, which Gateway says will provide "up to eight hours" of battery life. In our experience, these claims are always a bit generous - as with most new ultraportables, expect real world battery life somewhere between the larger all-purpose laptops and smaller netbooks.
The Gateway EC14D will go on sale late in January at a starting price of $629.99.
