It has been reported that the Internet’s most popular video site, YouTube, is getting into the movie rental business.

YouTube will start operating as a rental outlet this coming Friday, to help promote movies that will be shown at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival.

The first batch of YouTube rentals will cost $3.99 for a 48-hour viewing period.

In the future, rental viewing windows will range from one to 90 days, with movie studios paying YouTube a commission from each rental.

The rental innovation will see the Google-owned YouTube go into competition with existing operators such as Apple’s iTunes store, Amazon, Netflix and Blockbuster.
