March 2010 Shout! Factory Newsletter

M-M-Max Head-Head-Headroom
The rumors are true — well, the ones regarding Shout!’s forthcoming release of Max Headroom: The Complete Series anyway. We really aren’t in a position to confirm or deny some of those other salacious page-turners. Of course, you do remember Max Headroom. He was the spokesperson of a generation. He did soda commercials, hosted his own music video program and was even in an Art Of Noise video back in the day. The eponymous character was the center of the cult favorite, which lasted only 14 episodes in 1987-88. It starred Matt Frewer as a reporter whose mind is downloaded into a computer to create a virtual clone who exists in the digital world. A little ahead of its time perhaps? The cast was rounded out by Amanda Pays, Jeffrey Tambor and W. Morgan Sheppard. More details to follow as we get closer to the August street date.

Yo Joe! It’s Season 2.0

OK, G.I. Joe fans. It’s finally here, or will be soon. We’re bringing the second season of the 1980s series to DVD. Though it was collected in our mega footlocker set last year, this is the first time this season has been available as a, well, season. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, Season 2.0 includes the final 30 episodes and introduces the mighty Serpentor, Beach-Head, Leatherneck, Low Light, Main Frame, Zandar and Zarana. Bonus features include a featurette on the legacy of G.I. Joe, “Knowing Is Half The Battle” PSAs and archival Hasbro toy commercials. The 4-DVD set is out on April 27.

Roger Corman Rocks!
Not only did the venerable filmmaker recently receive an Honorary Award at the Oscars, he’s also responsible for two of our favorite punk films: Rock ’N’ Roll High School and Suburbia. What a rock star! These two titles also happen to be the initial releases in our Roger Corman’s Cult Classics series and are on schedule for May 11 with new anamorphic widescreen transfers. RNRHS, a.k.a. the Ramones film, is loaded with bonus features, such as new audio commentaries with the cast, director and screen writers, a retrospective with director Allan Arkush, Roger Corman, Joe Dante and Marky Ramone, and more! The Suburbia release is spiffied up by audio commentaries with director Penelope Spheeris, producer Bert Dragin and cast member Jennifer Clay, plus a still gallery and trailers.

Tom Lehrer: Ready For His Close-up
Tom Lehrer could make Pythagoras “lol” if such a situation were ever possible. The veteran musical comedian switched careers after a successful run in the 1950s and ’60s to be a math professor—by choice—and now his much-sought-after works are finally available. The iTunes store currently hosts eight classic out-of-print albums, but the big news is that we’re releasing a CD/DVD called The Tom Lehrer Collection, which will be in stores on April 13. The 2-disc set includes 26 audio tracks, plus a DVD with 12 tracks from an Oslo show in 1967 and animated clips from The Electric Company. The release adds up to one great way to reacquaint—or be introduced to—this treasured artist.
